- Establish your brand. Know what you want and how to communicate it. Do your homework (see our Career Assessment tools). Build a polished resume (see Resume Builders).
- Get connected! Networking is not on the radar when you're in the military. In the civilian world, it's what makes careers. A good place to start: LinkedIn. Get your profile to at least 80% completeness and start connecting like crazy.
- Learn the language of business. You say you don't know about "sales and marketing?" Of course you do! You just don't know how to translate that experience to business people. "Project Management," "Bottom Line," "Customer Service?" You've got these covered--more than you know. Don't let your MOS define your future. Understand and communicate how your military experience into what employers want and you'll be way ahead of the game.
- Wade in. Information interviews are a great way to build your network, understand the landscape and improve your visibility to employers. "One-day internships" are part of our Employer Partner program and do much the same.
- Be a warrior. You can't be too aggressive when it comes to prospecting. You'll need to dial back to Assertive, Curious and Engaged once you get into dialog, but your mission focus, predisposition to serve, dedication, professionalism and team orientation will shine through.
